One of the interesting parts about
having a co-author of the trip's blog is that
we force you, the reader, to endure two very distinct story telling
styles. Two writers and no editors. On the plus side events are documented from two
perspectives.
We managed to be a bit behind schedule on day
two, and decided to stop short of our planned campsite destination.
The schedule was sabotaged by a trip to Kohls, which was worth every
second spent given the result was a nice egg-crate mattress topper
for my bed. I've been trying to dial in that bed since the day we
got the RV, and this is the closest it has become to pleasant. It
may only move the needle to “bearable”, but hopefully that will
last for all 30 days. As it now stands, the bed above the bunk is a full 54" wide (double bed) on a solid platform with a 5" foam mattress and the aforementioned topper. And I've switched sleeping companions - Kellen is my new bunk mate. We'll see how that works out.
Back to Iowa. We had one more roadside
attraction that we wanted to see, and we clearly were not going to
make it. I thought we should stop for the night prior to exit for
the “spider beetle”, so we didn't have to backtrack in the
morning. But, where would we find a campground west of Des Moines?
Well, apparently anywhere and everywhere. As in every single exit had a
campground sign. After a false stop, following signs to a site 2
miles north of I-80 that never materialized (or at least not before
the road turned to dirt), we went back to I-80 and eventually landed
at Anita State Park, located by Anita Lake, just outside of, you probably see this one coming, Anita, Iowa. A “Whale of a Town” according to the sign.
Under a full moon in a cloudless sky, we settled in for the night's
rest. That's how I plan to remember it.
