All quiet on the eastern front

During the planning of the trip, it was obvious that there were some pretty interesting and exciting days that lay ahead of us. Some parts of the trip however will be, well, boring.  At best, that is.  No way to sugar coat it.  Like driving across Ohio.  Or packing. But Friday night, during the peak packing frenzy (that would be after my 2 hours of goofing off on the computer) the phone rings.  It's my neighbor across the street.

Neighbor: "Hey Greg.  Have you been on the Cape Facebook page?"
Me: "Yes, why?"

Neighbor: "There's something going down.  Swan (Drive) is full of cops"
Me: "Yeah, Kristin said they had it blocked off when she drove back from Grauls"

"They told everyone to stay inside"
"I saw that"
"OK.  I just thought you should know since I figured you were outside loading the RV"

And there you have it.  The trip packing may have just become the most dangerous part of the trip. More dangerous than the Dan Ryan Expressway.  I never considered getting shot or kidnapped the night before the trip.  Footnote - we all survived in tact.

But this was a subtle reminder that the best memories of the trip could come from any day, during any "activity".  Today, as I write this from our KOA just outside Indianapolis, Indiana, I can assure you that the most memorable moment of the trip will not come from today.  Because today, as expected, was a rainy drive through some beautiful mountains in western Maryland, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Ohio, and the excitement meter never went above 2.  Which is also to say no catastrophic event happened either.  Although in fairness the kids are not asleep yet.

I think the most excitement came when I was unable to remember the combination to the lock that secured the bikes to the rack.  I sent Kellen off on a scooter instead, and thankfully 5 minutes and a handful (or two) tries the code was finally cracked.   I don't know how I would have survived telling everyone that the bikes were going to be solely an elaborate decoration.

Tomorrow looks like much of the same.  As you can see, the technology front seems to be holding up strong.  The potential drama on the horizon involves finding doughnuts for breakfast (it's hard to skip doughnut day), and figuring out if the A/C is actually broken or just degraded.  Yep, that's the A/C from the previous post that was the linchpin of the maintenance drama.  Good thing the plains aren't too hot in the summer.  Right?

In closing, and for those keeping score at home "Going Mobile" was the song that kicked off the trip.  Thanks for my brother for the great suggestion.

  1. Surely you've got some Willie at some point. It's not a road trip without 'On The Road Again' on a frequent basis.

  2. I'm sorry that I missed the opportunity to weigh in on a theme song. I would have suggested something obvious, like Holiday Road.
