The Vehicle

In December 2011 we purchased our first RV, a 2003 Itasca Sunstar.  The Sunstar, and it's identical twin the Winnebago Vista, is a Class "C" motorhome built on a VW Eurovan chassis.  It's just about the smallest RV with a full bath and a full kitchen.  Highlights include
  • Sleeps 4
  • 3 burner stove
  • 20 gallons fresh water
  • hot water heater
  • 6 gallon propane tank
  • 2 way (AC/propane) refrigerator with freezer compartment
  • A/C
  • Propane heat
  • Full bathroom with shower
  • 2800 Watt generator

The Class C means that it has a sleeping bunk above the driving cab, and has toilet facilities.  At 21', it is very compact and we have parked in regular parking spaces in parking lots.  It even fit in street parking spaces in Nova Scotia!

The engine is a 6 cylinder (VR-6) gas engine.  It has plenty of power and gets (relatively) good gas milage at 12-14 m.p.g.  Similar RV's in the 21'-24' range get 8-10 m.p.g. with V-10 engines.  That may not sound like a big difference, but over a 7,000 mile trip it adds up!
